Electrotherapy in Zagreb
Current through electrodes on the skin, used for two different jobs that often get confused.
In short
This is delivered inside a physical therapy session, which costs 70 EUR and lasts 45 to 60 minutes including the assessment. Full list on the pricing page.
Two different purposes
TENS is for pain. Current at a frequency that interferes with pain signalling produces a tingling sensation and turns the pain down while it runs, with some carry-over afterwards. It changes nothing structurally, and that is fine: it buys a window in which you can move.
Neuromuscular stimulation is a different job. Stronger current makes the muscle actually contract, which matters when a muscle has switched off after surgery or injury and you cannot recruit it voluntarily yet.
When each is worth using
TENS suits acute pain that is limiting movement, and some chronic pain where it helps sleep and daily function. If it is the only thing keeping you comfortable months in, the plan needs revisiting.
Muscle stimulation earns its place in the early weeks after knee surgery in particular, where quadriceps inhibition is common and holds back everything else.
Frequently asked questions
- What does it feel like?
- TENS is a tingling or buzzing sensation, adjusted to be strong but comfortable. Muscle stimulation produces a visible contraction and feels strange at first, but should not be painful.
- Can I buy a TENS unit for home?
- Yes, and for the right indication it is reasonable. Ask us about placement and settings, since most of the value is in using it correctly for the right problem.
- Who should not have it?
- People with a pacemaker or implanted electronic device, during pregnancy over the abdomen and lower back, over the front of the neck, over broken skin, and over areas with impaired sensation.
- Does it replace exercise?
- No. Muscle stimulation bridges the gap when you cannot yet contract a muscle voluntarily. Once you can, voluntary loading does more.
