What it does
TECAR passes high-frequency current through tissue, generating heat within it rather than on the surface. Warm tissue is more extensible and better perfused, which is why the treatment is timed immediately before manual work and exercise rather than used on its own.
It is applied for chronic tendon problems, stiff joints, and muscle injuries past the acute stage.
Where it sits in a plan
As a preparation, not a treatment in its own right. A device that makes tissue temporarily more compliant is useful only if something then happens in that window. On its own, the effect is a pleasant sensation of warmth that fades.

Frequently asked questions
- What does it feel like?
- A deep, comfortable warmth under the applicator. It should never feel hot on the skin; tell the physiotherapist immediately if it does.
- How many sessions?
- It is used as part of physical therapy sessions rather than counted separately. Whether it is used at all depends on what your assessment found.
- Who should not have it?
- People with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, during pregnancy over the trunk, over active cancer, over metal implants in some configurations, and over areas with impaired sensation. Tell us your history at the assessment.
- Is it better than manual therapy?
- It is not an alternative to it. Used before hands-on work and exercise it can make both more productive; used instead of them it does very little that lasts.
