That first step in the morning
Sharp pain under the heel with the first steps out of bed, easing after a few minutes of walking, is the classic description of plantar fascia irritation. It is one of the most common foot complaints and it responds better to a combination of hands-on work, calf treatment and loading than to any of those alone.
The calf matters more than people expect. A tight, weak calf changes how the foot loads at every step.
What a session includes
Work on the sole and the small muscles of the foot, the calf and Achilles, and mobilisation of the mid-foot and ankle if testing shows they are stiff. You leave with a short loading programme, because tissue under the foot adapts to load and to nothing else.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this reflexology?
- No. This is treatment of the muscles, fascia and joints of the foot for a musculoskeletal reason. Reflexology is a different framework and we do not make claims for it.
- Will massage cure plantar fasciitis?
- It helps considerably with the symptoms, but the thing that changes the outcome is graded loading of the calf and foot over weeks. Massage makes that loading tolerable sooner.
- Should I stop running?
- Usually you can keep running with the volume adjusted. Complete rest tends to feel better for a week and then reproduce the problem on the return, because the tissue got weaker in the meantime.
- What about my shoes?
- They matter, but less than the internet suggests. We will look at what you actually wear all day rather than only at your running shoes.
