What the tape does
Kinesiology tape is elastic and moves with you rather than locking a joint. Depending on how it is applied it can offload an irritated tendon, give a joint a directional cue, reduce swelling in an area, or simply change how the region feels enough that you move more normally.
The honest version: the effect is modest and short lived, usually two to four days per application. It is useful as a bridge while strength catches up, not as the treatment itself.
When it earns its place
Returning to sport after an ankle sprain. A knee that feels unreliable on stairs. Swelling after surgery once the wound has closed. A shoulder that needs a cue to stop shrugging during rehabilitation.
If tape is the only thing keeping you comfortable four weeks in, the plan is wrong and needs revisiting.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does the tape stay on?
- Two to four days, including showering. Pat it dry rather than rubbing. Remove it earlier if the skin becomes itchy or red.
- Can I put it on myself?
- You can, but the direction, tension and starting position of the joint are what make it do anything. Applied without those, it is expensive decoration.
- Does the colour matter?
- No. The colours exist for the same reason shoes come in colours.
- Can I swim with it?
- Yes. It survives water. Chlorine and repeated soaking will shorten how long it stays stuck.
