What a session involves
You lie still with the limb or joint inside a coil or under an applicator for fifteen to thirty minutes. You feel nothing at all. There is no heat, no current sensation and nothing to do.
It is most commonly used over joints with degenerative change and after fractures, where it is claimed to support bone healing.
Realistic expectations
The evidence is stronger for some indications, such as delayed fracture healing, than for general joint pain, where it is modest. It is low risk and passive, which is exactly why it is easy to oversell.
We use it as a supporting treatment alongside physical therapy, not as a reason to skip the active work.
Frequently asked questions
- Will I feel anything?
- No. There is no sensation, which surprises most people. Absence of sensation is not a sign it is not working, but it is also not a sign that it is.
- How many sessions?
- Typically a course of ten or more, since the effect is cumulative if there is one at all. It is used within a wider plan.
- Who should not have it?
- People with a pacemaker or implanted electronic device, during pregnancy, over active cancer, and over areas of active bleeding. Metal implants such as plates and screws are usually not a problem but tell us anyway.
- Can I do it instead of exercises?
- No. It is passive, and passive treatment does not build the capacity that keeps a joint comfortable. It supports the programme rather than replacing it.
